Communication is Key: How Couples Therapy Can Help

Have you been experiencing a roadblock when it comes to communication with your partner(s)? Maybe you get stuck in a cycle and have a hard time finding resolutions to conversations or one of you struggles to effectively communicate your thoughts and feelings. At Sirianna Relationship & Sex Therapy, we often work with couples who are facing issues with communication. This is a common and often resolvable issue. To be in couples therapy doesn’t mean that your relationship is in shambles or there is a threat to it ending!

Couples therapy is helpful for many different situations like:

  • Couples who want to improve and strengthen their relationship with better communication.
  • Couples facing challenges like infidelity, addiction, grief.
  • Couples who are in a transition phase like becoming new parents, recently married, relocation, or career changes.
  • Couples who are having more frequent disagreements/arguments and are feeling distant from each other.

During couples therapy, partners meet with a trained therapist in a safe space to discuss the challenges they are facing. This allows partners to be open about their feelings and what may be bothering them as it can sometimes be hard to be direct with your partner(s) at home, or wherever conversations take place.

In the sessions, we aim to create a space where couples can:

  • Speak honestly and openly about what their feelings are and what is bothering them.
  • Learn new communication skills with a focus on active listening, expressing your needs, and reflection through Emotional Focused Therapy.
  • See and hear your partner(s) perspective to gain more understanding.

Some topics your therapist may discuss with you are:

Communication Patterns: This helps to get a better understanding of how you and your partner(s) communicate and identify if there may be a cycle you get “stuck” in. This is also helpful in identifying how the couple handles disagreements.

Goals of the relationship: Therapy is all about you, so we make sure that we are working towards the goals and change that YOU want to see.

Core needs: Each individual has their own core needs and it is important that the partner(s) know what they are in order to work towards meeting them.

Through the session(s), the therapist will use a variety of techniques such as active listening and providing feedback. Our therapists will give you exercises and homework that focus on communication, emotional regulation, and conflict resolution. The work takes time, effort, and communication from all parties and it is an investment in your relationship. We would love to work with you if you are interested in improving your communication and/or relationship(s)!
