The Benefits of Video (Online) Psychotherapy

August 7, 2024 alliance

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, online video therapy for mental health care has fast become a preferred option for many therapists and their clients! Here’s why:

  • Flexibility and convenience: Online options provide easy access to therapy! There is no travel time to an office freeing up time to finish work, attend to the needs of a child, or make dinner! Plus, it eliminates the costs of childcare and transportation.
  • Increased sense of comfort: The comfort of being in your own space while discussing personal and sometimes challenging topics is a significant benefit. Being in a separate physical space allows you to feel less vulnerable, enabling you to be more open about challenging topics. Additionally, there’s easy access to comfort items—like pets, a comfy blanket, or a hot mug of tea—helping you to feel safer during difficult or painful conversations.
    • Beneficial for those with physical limitations or disabilities: Accessing therapy remotely is a huge advantage for many, especially those with physical restrictions like chronic pain, illness, or difficulty with commuting. Connecting virtually can also lower social anxieties associated with sharing physical spaces with others.
    • Easy access for clients in remote or rural areas: Driving long distances to seek specialized care utilizes additional resources. For example, if you are seeking a highly qualified and trained sex therapist, you might be facing a long commute, depending on where you live.
  • Proven to work: Multiple evidence-based research studies show that psychotherapy in online formats is just as effective as in-person therapy! The same treatment modalities that are beneficial in person translate equally well to video sessions.

While there are many great benefits, are there downsides to online video therapy?

  • Online care is not ideal for every situation: Clients who experience more serious mental health difficulties, or are in crisis, are likely to benefit more from in-person therapy.
  • Confidentiality and privacy: This is often a big concern for clients. While some web formats like Zoom or Facetime are susceptible to cyber breaches, we utilize encrypted HIPPA-compliant software to protect your security during a videoconference. In terms of privacy, you, the client must have a secure private space where you can speak freely while avoiding the potential for someone else to overhear you.
  • Reliance on technology: Both you and your therapist must count on quality internet connections and software programs. During a session, one or both of you may lose service, interfering with your ability to connect as desired. Your therapist will create a plan with you on what to do if internet service is lost.
